High Voltage DC Transmission Lines
Frequently solar and wind farms are located long distances from city's or even at sea. High Voltage direct current transmission lines are frequently used for very long distance or underwater power transmission. AC power heats the insulation separating the wire carrying the current. The changing direction of the E field excites the dipoles in the insulation generating heat and thus power loss. In above ground transmission lines energy escapes as low frequency radiation. DC transmission also eliminates the need to compensate for difference in phase of AC over long distances.
